Lucy has carried interest in the arts since a young age. Now, they've turned their variety of interests into one - Lucy Bead, Drag Artist! Lucy talks about her work and finding your real self in your creativity.

Tell us about your creative journey - do you recall how you first discovered your interest and passion for the arts?
My interest in the arts dates back literally as far as I can recall. Drawing has been in my outlet since childhood and it evolved as I grew. Combining an interest in fashion, cosmetics, sculpture, music and performing boiled down into the crazy Drag Entity that stands before you today.
Talk about your style. What defines your art? What do you pull inspiration from?
I use to struggle a lot with my inability to nail realism. So, I stopped trying to nail it. I learned that illustration was my strong suit and I took my childhood dream of being a cartoonist and literally became the cartoon.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Push that aside, be true to you, and you will find exactly where you're meant to be.
What’s the most challenging part of being an artist - and what’s the most rewarding?
Challenging? Definitely just being your own worst critic. I've finally gotten to a place in my art where I can produce something I'm willing to put my name on. In my drag, I compare myself to the TV Queens too often and start to suffocate on my own self criticism. Push that aside and remind yourself what you bring to the table and keep giving that. Which leads directly to the rewarding part - when you see the pay off of just being yourself and finding your crowd.
How do you hope people feel or what do you hope they take away when they experience your art?
I hope people feel joy. I hope people feel represented. I hope they find something that can connect with.
What role do you think art plays in a community like ours?
Art is a community backbone. Not everyone can see it, but it's a part of everything you enjoy. Music, movies, books, shows, an artists in some capacity had to be involved for any of that to come to be.
What’s next for you—are there any upcoming projects, shows, events, or goals you’re excited to share?

I am part of a rotating cash of hosts that volunteer to run a bi-weekly Open Stage at Poacher's Arms in London, Ontario. Keep your eyes peeled around the Pride season for my next storytime with Strathroy Pride! Outside of that, I am available for bookings!
